The Winter 2016 issue of The Record features a case study on Mobile Technologies Inc. The full-length article is as follows:
Using Bluestar PLM’s solution running on Microsoft Dynamics AX, Mobile Technologies Inc has reduced time spent on engineering change order processes by 80%
With a vision to revolutionise human interactions using mobile solutions, Mobile Technologies Inc (MTI) – which has over 850 employees spread across four locations – has established itself as a pioneer in mobile device display technologies.
Operating in an industry like this requires a huge amount of flexibility as designs can go through multiple iterations during development. However, until recently, MTI’s engineering change order (ECO) process was largely manual. “Initiators were literally running around the office to collect all required signatures,” explains Anna Toloeva, system integration lead at the company. “We were rarely able to collect all required signatures in a timely manner and so ECOs often created significant delays.”
What’s more, the ECO log, which was a manually maintained spreadsheet, did not show all part numbers under revision. “This meant that two people could change the same part numbers under different ECOs without knowing it,” Toloeva says.
On top of this, MTI’s ECO process was time and cost intensive. “And that’s just the tip of the iceberg,” Toloeva explains. “Our systems didn’t integrate with our Dynamics AX software, we faced many documentation issues and our quoting process took days. Collaboration was weak – a big issue considering how geographically dispersed we are.”
With all this in mind, MTI looked to Bluestar PLM, a Microsoft partner focused on product lifecycle management (PLM) solutions integrated within Microsoft Dynamics AX. “The team at Bluestar PLM impressed us,” says Toloeva. “Having a solution running from AX meant that we wouldn’t have to learn a whole new system. It would also make future upgrades easier because everything is contained in one place.”
The implementation took five months from start to finish. “It included the install and configuration of Bluestar PLM inside AX, customising a lot of features to meet our needs and creating training documentation,” explains Toloeva. “We also did on-site training in our US and Hong Kong offices.
“The biggest challenge was the amount of code that we needed to generate and insert to customise the process to fit our needs. For example, there was specific AX data that needed to be updated upon ECO implementation.”
The results have been worth it. “We achieved our goals,” Toloeva says. “We’ve reduced time spent on ECO processes by 80%. We’ve reduced document control time on ECO tasks by 60%- 80%. We’ve achieved multi-site engineering collaboration and created one central place to store and manage our data. And we have true revision and lifecycle control.
“We are very happy. Communication and collaboration was very smooth and we’ve had great support during the implementation. We look forward to working with the team at Bluestar PLM long into the future.”

Microsoft Announces Big Changes at the AXUG Summit
The next generation of cloud business applications has arrived! Dynamics AX has become a part of the newest Microsoft concept: the totally cloud-based Dynamics 365. Microsoft made some key announcements about the future of Microsoft Dynamics, including the new AX Product Roadmap as well as the details of Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Operations. As one of the first movers onto the Dynamics AX7 cloud-based platform (released earlier this year), Bluestar PLM was well-equipped for the launch of Microsoft 365 and is now available as a stand-alone license.
AXUG Summit attendees who stopped by our booth were excited that Bluestar PLM is fully-embedded inside Dynamics AX, as well as the ability to utilize full PLM functionality via ERP-integration.
AXUG Summit made it very clear that Bluestar PLM gave a unique impression on those who stopped by. The fact that Bluestar PLM software is completely embedded in the Dynamics (AX) and the ability to apply a full PLM functionality inside the ERP.
Overall, Bluestar PLM made a good impression on those who stopped by and we would like to thank all the attendees who visited our booth!
We were very surprised at the number of attendees, and we will definitely be in attendance again next year. So please mark your calendars for the AXUG Summit 2017 taking place on October 10th through 13th in Nashville! Let us Rock and Roll.
Microsoft focus on ISV and Partners at Industry Summit 2016
Bluestar PLM attended the US Industry Summit 2016. Microsoft made it clear to put more effort into the collaboration with the ISV’s and partners. This increases the joint cooperation and will also increase the common benefit of the entire working relationship. Microsoft wants the users of Dynamics 365 to be able to combine specific apps that fit right into their company. According to the new cloud-based concept the combinations will be limitless.
The future of PLM and ERP
The setup from Microsoft regarding AppSource and the new focus on working together through ISV’s and partners fits right into how Bluestar PLM works. Azure and AppSource benefits all the users of Dynamics, and as an ISV, Bluestar PLM, are certain this is the future. Bluestar PLM has an ongoing collaboration with Microsoft and this states our position as a strong and unique solution for engineering in Dynamics 365. Bluestar PLM is fully-embedded inside Dynamics (AX), and the ability to utilize full PLM functionality in Dynamics 365 is not only the future. It is already there.

The Evolution of Microsoft Dynamics
The new Microsoft Dynamics is here, and so is the new and improved Bluestar PLM solution. Microsoft Dynamics 365 combines ERP and CRM solutions (AX, GP, and CRM) into a single, cloud-based solution. The previous version, Dynamics AX, is now a part of Dynamics 365 Enterprise Edition, which consists of 6 integrated modules. The Bluestar PLM application now exists as a part of the Dynamics 365 for Operations module. The Bluestar team is thrilled that Microsoft has shifted focus to a cloud-based solution suite that is readily available to all.
Bluestar PLM in the Cloud
Bluestar PLM has evolved right alongside Microsoft since the very beginning. As one of the first movers, Bluestar PLM for AX7 has been on the market since Dynamics AX7 was first released. Since AX7 was already a cloud-based solution, equipped for the next AX transformation, Bluestar PLM is already optimized for the Dynamics 365 release. As a fully functional Dynamics 365-embedded solution, Bluestar PLM is the Engineering Solution for Dynamics 365. Our solution is the missing link between engineering and operations, and as a part of Dynamics 365 for Operations users can now work smarter with connected operations in the cloud.
Bluestar PLM is also available as a stand-alone license, which means that users can now get the solution unattached to ERP systems for use as an independent PLM solution.
